THE WORLD’S LARGEST BUKARA

A bukara is far more than a wooden vessel – it is a symbol of hospitality, trust, and the shared table, a quiet yet powerful affirmation of closeness among people. The project “The Largest Bukara in the World” brought together the Fondacija BUKOVICA from Amsterdam and the association Kistanjski zalasci sunca from Kistanje, giving the initiative a sincere spirit of friendship and forging a strong bond between people in the homeland and those in the diaspora. The bukara was crafted by a master of the old school, Toma Rožman Tošan from Kuterevo. It was carved from carefully selected spruce, and a particular challenge lay in finding a naturally shaped branch perfectly suited for the handle. The creation of the world’s largest bukara weaves together skill, patience, and a love for wood, so it’s no surprise that this impressive piece draws attention wherever it appears.

Our “superbukara” was featured on the main news program of HRT (Croatian Radiotelevision),

in the press,

and was also presented in Zagreb at a panel discussion organized by SPD Privrednik.

We plan to present it at fairs and cultural events, and we believe that one day it will hold a place of honor in the planned Museum of Bukovica in Kistanje. The bukara is currently in the process of being submitted for inclusion in the Guinness Book of Records.

Tradition lives only when people consciously preserve it, pass it on to younger generations, and share it with pride. This project has reminded us of the shared values that transcend national, religious, and political divisions in our homeland.
